About We The People - Michigan: We The People - Michigan works to build multi-racial, working class organizing capacity, alliances, and infrastructure across the state of Michigan focused on building proactive and unified vision of a Michigan. That vision is rooted in economic, racial, and social justice and works toward building long-term governing power in our state. We believe that a Michigan where all of our communities can live with dignity is possible if we build it together. In two years, we’ve grown from an idea and a staff of one to a burgeoning statewide organization with ten full-time staff across the state. This year we are transitioning from being a fiscally-sponsored organization to our own organization, and our Operations Director will help lead us through the process.

Position: We seek a full-time Operations Director that will take responsibility for managing WTP’s finances, grants management, human resources and operations. This is a senior leadership role with an opportunity to shape the systems that foster healthy internal culture. We’re looking for someone who can design systems and processes to coordinate the day-to-day operations of the organization and our team. We are looking for an experienced leader who shares our vision and values, and who obsesses over the details required to create a healthy, high-functioning, well-organized, and joyful work environment.  

The ideal candidate will be an energetic team builder, a resourceful problem solver, and an experienced leader with expertise in designing effective systems from the ground up. 

The Operations Director will work closely with the Executive Director and will supervise an Operations Associate. They will have access to support from accounting, legal, and human resources contractors and professionals.  

Primary Responsibilities: Below are a list of some of the areas of work that we would like the Operations Director to tackle:

Financial Management & Grants Management

  • Create new, smart financial systems that anticipate organizational needs

  • Work with the contract accountant and the Executive Director on the annual budget

  • Work with the contract accountant to ensure that financial reports and filings are prepared on a monthly and/or an as needed basis 

  • Coordinate annual audit preparations 

  • Coordinate with bookkeeper to ensure that check requests, deposits, employee reimbursements, accounts receivable, invoice, and accounts payable processes are handled in a timely fashion and documented appropriately 

  • Track grant reporting and application deadlines and work with the Executive Director and others to ensure that reports and applications are done in a timely manner

Organizational Development & Human Resources

  • Build and refine internal policies and procedures to foster healthy organizational culture

  • Creating thoughtful onboarding processes for new staff 

  • Supporting the Deputy Director and Executive Director in designing work planning and evaluation processes across the staff

  • Lead HR functions for the organization, including developing personnel policies in line with WTP’s organizational values 

  • Primary lead on creating WTP’s benefits package

  • Managing (with the assistance of Operations Associate) WTP’s benefits, timesheets and payroll.

Compliance/Legal Liaison

  • Take responsibility for moving the operational pieces of creating an affiliated 501c3 and one 501c4 forward in conjunction with our attorney  

  • Lead our process on internal 501c3 and 501c4 compliance when we’ve launched from being fiscally sponsored

Other duties  

  • Develop and implement IT policies and budget and recommend technology needs for staff and the organization

  • Facilitate process of finding office space if needed for staff across the state 

  • Other duties and tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis


  • At least three to five years of relevant work experience in an operations role, ideally at a mission-driven organization or start-up with experience leading a team 

  • Deep commitment to the values and vision of We The People

  • Outstanding project management and analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail

  • Experience creating structure around organization processes, designing effective systems, and supporting teams in adopting them 

  • Experience in leading diverse work teams and building organizational culture. Thoughtful, positive, confident leader who can build trust with staff and acts with integrity 

  • Experience creating or managing an organizational budget

  • Should understand (and be comfortable explaining to others) financial statements

  • Ideally, some employment or nonprofit law knowledge

Compensation: This position is full-time. Salary starts at $55,000 with room for negotiation for more experienced candidates. This position includes full health, dental, and vision benefits, generous paid leave and holidays, and professional development opportunities.
