Detroit Community Organizing Workshop
This weekend, we hosted our first community organizing workshop of the year. We kicked it off with 10 teams (over 60 participants) from Detroit, Washtenaw County, and Lansing coming together to learn the craft of community organizing.
We spent a full weekend together learning how to tell our stories of what draws us to do this work, how to create teams, and build a shared strategy. A big shout out to our Detroit organizer, Star Roland, for doing an amazing job at facilitating a team and organizing a whole workshop!
Cosecha March for Driver’s Licenses
On May 1, communities in Detroit, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids marched for driver’s licenses. Over 500 marched down the streets of Southwest Detroit to demand driver’s licenses for undocumented people in Michigan. It was a beautiful display of solidarity, power, and community resilience.
We the People is partnering with Cosecha to take on the fight for driver’s licenses, we will keep you updated with news and developments.
Mama’s Bail Out
Mother's Day is around the corner, and we want to send love to all the mamas out there. In many of our communities though, moms could be languishing in cages, separated from their families and loved ones simply because they cannot afford bail. Join us in bailing out as many mothers as we can the week before Mother’s Day. Please consider contributing to the Mama's Day Bail Out to help this important effort.
We the People is working with nearly two dozen local and national groups to bail out our mothers so they can spend the Mother’s Day with their families. A special gratitude to our organizing fam at Michigan Liberation for their leadership on this effort.
This Mother’s Day, we are raising money to bring our mamas home. The Mama’s Bail Out Day is rooted in the tradition of our enslaved ancestors who went to every length, including harnessing their collective resources, to purchase each other’s freedom and keep their families together. This year, we are taking a stand against a money bail system that tears our families apart and punishes our mothers for being poor.
