Mama’s Bail Out Celebration!

What’s better than celebrating moms on Mother’s Day? Celebrating Black moms bailed out from local jails! In the weeks prior to Mother’s Day We The People - MI joined Michigan Liberation, the Bail Project, and the Detroit Justice Center to bail out over 15 Black moms in Wayne, Oakland, and Kalamazoo Counties. On May 19, we celebrated Black moms coming home with a big community dinner, music, massages, and a cake! Thank you to our Detroit organizer, Star Roland, for taking the lead on the celebration!

A living wage and Green New Deal: A community conversation

On Sunday June 2, over 80 community members from Warren and Detroit came together to talk about the connection between the Green New Deal, jobs, and environmental justice. Congress members Andy Levin (Congressional District 9) and Brenda Lawrence (Congressional District 14) joined us to listen to community concerns and their own fight in Congress for environmental and economic justice.

This Town Hall is part of the ongoing efforts to build alliances between organizers across 8 Mile Rd in Detroit and Warren, the starkest racial divide in the U.S. We the People MI is incredibly excited to continue organizing efforts in Macomb County and to build power for working class people.

Thanks to the A. Phillip Randolph Institute, Jobs with Justice, ROC Michigan, Sunrise Movement Michigan, and Good Jobs Now for their support in making the town hall a success!

Join the fight against a detention center near Baldwin, MI

A few weeks ago, We The People - MI learned about the plans to open a private detention center near Baldwin in Lake County. Lake County is the poorest county in Michigan and has had various GEO owned incarceration facilities, including a youth detention center that closed in 2017. Baldwin is also right next door to Idlewild, a historically Black community where we held our first ever statewide convening in 2018.

Organizers have been fighting to oppose the immigration detention center, but it seems like the GEO Group contract is already solidified. Nonetheless, We the People MI is working with other organizers to push back against GEO Group and change the narrative of who will be detained at this facility. We know that GEO Group incarcerates poor Brown and Black folks, as well as immigrants, and that immigration detention and incarceration are two sides of the same coin.

We will keep you posted on new developments as they arise.
