April 2019

Hey fam!

After a long Michigan winter, spring has finally sprung. With the weather beginning to break, I can’t help but reflect back on the Pablo Neruda quote we used as the tagline of the Idlewild Convening: They can cut all the flowers, but they can’t stop the spring.

It has been 22 months since we launched We The People, built an incredible team of organizers across Michigan, and began working with all of you to build the leadership, relationships, and solidarity necessary to transform our communities and the power together to transform our state. We’ve got a lot of beautiful work to build together, because our spring is coming.

Be sure to check out the updates from your region in this newsletter, but I wanted to offer a couple of quick reminders on upcoming events.

We’re hosting two intensive community organizing workshops next month in Detroit for folks in southeast Michigan and in Charlevoix for folks in northern Michigan. You can find out more information about the workshops here. If you have any questions about the Detroit workshop please reach out to Star Roland, and if you have any questions about the Charlevoix workshop please reach out to Betsy Coffia.

Power Mapping Pods

We know that our communities have often been pitted against one another to the benefit of corporate and wealthy actors. It’s important that we have a clear sense of how that power maneuvers in our communities, our state, and our democracy. That’s why we’re launching the Power Mapping Pods across the state. If you have not yet signed up on the interest form, please do so by Friday, April 12 th . If you have questions about the Power Mapping Pods, please reach out to Gaby Santiago-Romero.

The People’s Happy Hour

If you’re in Detroit this Friday, please come join us at PizzaPlex in Southwest Detroit for The People’s Happy Hour! It’s an opportunity to share space with good people to wrap up the week.

Finally, I wanted to share an exciting update from the We The People staff. Maria Ibarra-Frayre is stepping into the role of Deputy Director! We’re so excited to have Maria’s leadership helping to guide the We The People team. Please join us in welcoming Maria into her new role. Have a great week fam!

Much love and solidarity,

Megan Collier Hess
